How percentage is calculated — formula and three common uses
Percentage is one of the most universally applied mathematical concepts because it creates a standardised scale (0 to 100) that makes comparison easy across wildly different quantities. Whether you are comparing exam scores from different total marks, investment returns across different time periods, or discount offers across different price points, converting to percentage allows meaningful comparison on the same scale.
Percentage change is a related and frequently misunderstood calculation: Change % = ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100. This is used for inflation rates, stock returns, salary hikes, and price changes. A common error is applying this formula backwards: a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does not return to the original value. ₹100 +50% = ₹150, then − 50% = ₹75. The asymmetry of percentage gains and losses is why a 30% market fall requires a 43% gain just to recover.
In personal finance, the most impactful percentage to track is your savings rate — the percentage of your income that you save and invest. Research on wealth accumulation consistently shows that savings rate is more predictive of long-term financial success than investment return rate, especially in the early years of a career. A 30% savings rate will build wealth faster at 8% returns than a 10% savings rate at 15% returns. Use this calculator monthly to track your savings rate against your income.
Formula
Percentage = (Value ÷ Total) × 100
Value is the part you are measuring. Total is the whole or base. The result is always expressed as a number followed by the % symbol, representing how many out of every 100 units the value represents. To reverse the calculation: Value = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Total.
Worked example
Three common uses: (1) Exam marks: Scored 432 out of 500. Percentage = (432 ÷ 500) × 100 = 86.4%. (2) Discount check: Item costs ₹800, original price ₹1,000. Discount % = (200 ÷ 1000) × 100 = 20%. (3) Savings rate: Saved ₹12,000 from ₹60,000 income. Savings rate = (12,000 ÷ 60,000) × 100 = 20% — meeting the widely recommended savings benchmark.
