How discount is calculated โ€” three formulas

Discount calculations appear in everyday life more than almost any other type of percentage arithmetic โ€” sale prices, coupon codes, bulk pricing, and negotiated rates all require the same core formula. The challenge is that the same discount can be presented in three different ways: as a percentage off, as a final price, or as a savings amount. This calculator handles all three directions so you always have the complete picture.

A common mistake when evaluating successive discounts is to add the percentages. A 20% discount followed by a further 10% discount is not 30% off โ€” it is 28% off, because the second discount is applied to the already-reduced price. For any two successive discounts D1 and D2, the effective rate is: 1 โˆ’ (1 โˆ’ D1/100) ร— (1 โˆ’ D2/100). This matters when comparing a single 30% discount against a '20% off, then 10% off' offer โ€” the single discount is actually better.

Formula

Final Price = Original ร— (1 โˆ’ Rate/100) | Original = Final รท (1 โˆ’ Rate/100) | Rate % = ((Original โˆ’ Final) รท Original) ร— 100

To find the final price: multiply the original by (1 โˆ’ discount/100). To reverse-calculate the original from a discounted price: divide the final price by (1 โˆ’ discount/100). To find the discount percentage: subtract the final from the original, divide by the original, and multiply by 100.

Worked example

Example 1 โ€” Final price: Original โ‚น2,500, discount 30%. Final = โ‚น2,500 ร— 0.70 = โ‚น1,750. Savings = โ‚น750. Example 2 โ€” Original price: Final โ‚น1,750, discount 30%. Original = โ‚น1,750 รท 0.70 = โ‚น2,500. Example 3 โ€” Discount %: Original โ‚น2,500, final โ‚น1,750. Rate = ((2,500 โˆ’ 1,750) รท 2,500) ร— 100 = 30%.

Types of Discounts

Not all discounts work the same way. Understanding the type of discount being offered helps you calculate the true saving and compare offers accurately.

Percentage discount

The most common type. A fixed percentage is deducted from the original price. A 30% discount on โ‚น2,000 saves โ‚น600 regardless of any other factor. This calculator handles percentage discounts directly.

Flat amount discount

A fixed rupee or dollar amount is deducted. 'โ‚น200 off on orders above โ‚น1,000' is a flat discount. To find the equivalent percentage: Discount % = (Flat Amount รท Original Price) ร— 100.

Stacked / successive discounts

Two or more discounts applied one after another. A 20% discount followed by a further 10% discount is NOT the same as a 30% discount. The effective rate is: 1 โˆ’ (1 โˆ’ 0.20) ร— (1 โˆ’ 0.10) = 1 โˆ’ 0.72 = 28% total discount.

Buy-one-get-one (BOGO)

Getting one item free when buying one is equivalent to a 50% discount on the pair. Getting one at 50% off when buying one is equivalent to a 25% discount on the pair. Always calculate the effective per-unit discount to compare BOGO offers with straight percentage discounts.

Coupon codes and cashback

Coupon discounts reduce the price at checkout. Cashback is returned after purchase and may have conditions. For comparison purposes, treat cashback as a discount only if it is unconditional and immediate. Delayed or conditional cashback has a lower effective value.

Successive Discounts โ€” Effective Rate Table
