An age calculator is one of the most searched tools online because everyone needs to know their age at different points in life. Whether you are filling a form, checking eligibility for a scheme, or just curious โ€” our calculator gives you an instant and accurate answer without any manual counting or date arithmetic.

How age is measured around the world

This calculator follows the most widely used age system โ€” the one where your age increases by one on each birthday. Under this system, a person who has completed 3 years and 9 months of life is considered 3 years old, and will turn 4 only when their next birthday arrives. This is the standard in most Western countries and is the basis for legal age requirements worldwide.

Some East Asian traditions count age differently. In one traditional system, a newborn is considered 1 year old at birth โ€” because the nine months in the womb are counted as the first year of life. Age then increases at the start of the new lunar year rather than on the individual's birthday. This means two people born on different days in the same lunar year share the same traditional age, and a baby born just before the new year can be considered 2 years old within days of being born.

Another variation counts the current year as part of your age โ€” so a person who has lived 20 full years is described as being in their 21st year of life. While this phrasing sounds older, it refers to the same person. These cultural differences rarely affect legal or medical contexts, where the birthday-based system is universal.

Why month calculations can get tricky

Months have unequal lengths โ€” 28, 29, 30, or 31 days โ€” which creates ambiguity when calculating the gap between two dates that fall near the end of a month. Consider the period from February 28 to March 31. One valid interpretation is that February 28 to March 28 equals exactly one month, making the remainder 3 days โ€” giving a result of 1 month and 3 days. Another interpretation treats both dates as the last day of their respective months, making the entire span exactly one month.

The same ambiguity appears for pairs like April 30 to May 31, or May 30 to June 30. Neither interpretation is wrong โ€” they are simply different conventions. This calculator uses the first method: it counts from the same day of the following month and treats any remaining days as the day component. This is the most common approach used in legal and administrative contexts.

Feb 28 โ†’ Mar 31

1 month, 3 days

Feb 28 + 1 month = Mar 28, then 3 days remain

Apr 30 โ†’ May 31

1 month, 1 day

Apr 30 + 1 month = May 30, then 1 day remains

Jan 31 โ†’ Mar 31

2 months, 0 days

Exact two-month span, no remainder
